Jan Tytgat obtained a PhD in Inorganic and Analytical Chemistry from the University of Leuven (Belgium).

In 2008, he became General Manager of a new activity for Umicore: Battery Recycling, with focus on recycling of new generation rechargeable batteries. His task was to transform the R&D project into a real business unit.
In September 2011, the new business unit Umicore Battery Recycling inaugurated its new battery smelter in Hoboken (Antwerp, Belgium). This is the first industrial plant for Lithium-ion batteries recycling and for Rare Earth Elements recovery from Nickel Metal Hydride batteries.
